Annamaari Hyttinen
Annamaari Hyttinen (b. 1990) lives and works in Helsinki.
Hyttinen’s photorealistic paintings are charged with a pervasive tension, poised between safety and danger, familiarity and strangeness. Through painting, she explores experiences of alienation, unsettling memories, and ineffable feelings concealed within ordinary reality.
“I’m interested in situations in which a sense of danger creeps into carefree existence. In my paintings, I strive to capture conflicting emotions, such as the latent unease evoked by a specific childhood memory,” the artist explains. Often using herself as a model, her works depict visually engaging objects such as toys and accessories.
Deliberately challenging herself to be as subtle and minimal as possible, Hyttinen seeks to express herself through understated nuance. Her paintings are typically small in scale and meticulously cropped, leaving the surrounding space undefined. The works are imbued with an intensely charged atmosphere, as if suggesting an invisible presence.
