Eveliina Hämäläinen
Eveliina Hämäläinen (b. 1984) lives and works in Helsinki.
Hämäläinen approaches painting as a way of examining the passage of time, the workings of memory, and what it means to exist in entanglement with the environment and other people. Often grounded in observations from nature, her recurring motifs include birds, plants, and silhouette-like human figures.
The behaviour of materials is one of Hämäläinen’s enduring interests. She finds beauty in the marks of time: worn fabrics and paint surfaces veined with delicate craquelure. Her paintings recall old tapestries and murals in their decorative imagery and graceful handling of line, which evokes the tactile qualities of fabric.
Applying paint in multiple layers, scraping and engraving are integral to her process. Her recent work in performance art, including collaborations with circus artists and musicians, brings a new perspective to her painting practice. These performances engage with temporality by foregrounding transience and ephemerality.
