Juliana Hyrri

Juliana Hyrri (b. 1989) lives and works in Helsinki

Hyrri moves fluidly across painting, comics, and illustration. Varying widely in scale, her works depict everyday situations alive with movement and activity.

Working in oil on linen, Hyrri combines soft pastel tones with earthy, muted hues. While her paintings are predominantly figurative, certain details are boldly abstracted. She often begins her artistic process through writing, allowing her thoughts to flow freely onto the page.

Hyrri favours a spontaneous and uninhibited approach, rarely sketching her works in advance. As she puts it: “For me, painting is a field of constant experimentation. I like the fact that I can do pretty much anything and the end result can still be something completely unexpected.”
