Kaisa Huotari
Kaisa Huotari (b. 1994) lives and works in Helsinki.
Huotari views artmaking as a visual mode of exploring the world. Her practice engages with memory and the act of remembering, as well as the relationship between humans and nature.
Through bold experimentation, Huotari explores painting as a spatial experience. In this exhibition, the frames of her works incorporate hatches and windows that conceal frozen snapshots of seemingly insignificant everyday moments. When opened, these elements reconfigure the pictorial space, simultaneously hiding and revealing unexpected details.
Huotari explores ideas of letting go and surrender, and of learning to perceive light within what may feel like endless darkness. The installation Hiding Among the Flowers playfully reflects on the experience of losing and rediscovering one’s sense of self and identity.
As Huotari describes, “At its core, my art is an attempt to come to terms with feelings and themes associated with life’s finiteness.”
