Raana Lehtinen
Raana Lehtinen (b. 1990) lives and works in Helsinki.
Lehtinen’s paintings are consciously autobiographical, depicting the artist spending time with friends and family amid urban nature. Interweaving memory, imagination, and photographic material, her richly coloured works evoke the cyclical nature of time – seasons bleed into one another, and night and day may coexist.
Lehtinen’s subjects draw on her own positive memories of nature: climbing trees, enjoying afternoon coffee in the garden, or resting on a rock. Through these images, she seeks to establish an emotional connection with the viewer, inviting them to become participants in the scene. She strives to create a pictorial space that mirrors the movement of the gaze and the mobility of the observer, approximating the experience of being immersed in the reality one is observing.
During the warmer seasons, Lehtinen prefers to sketch and paint watercolours outdoors, while her colourful oil paintings are completed in the studio.
