Erwin Wurm

Disruption

The basic elements of the art of the Austrian sculptor Erwin Wurm (b. 1954) are design (including interior design and clothes design), architecture and more generally present-day society and its ordinary phenomena. His works also contain references to the history of sculpture and Western philosophy. Wurm continues in the tradition of pop, conceptual, performance and ready-made art. He has expanded the chronological, interactional and social perspectives of sculpture. Major themes in his work include a yearning for freedom and individuality, the vanity of striving, the breaking of rules and the subtle difference between the sublime and the base or between normativity and deviance.

The Disruption exhibition was retrospective. On show were works by the artist from the period 1992–2015. As the name of the exhibition implies, the works represent the destruction or break-up both of objects and also of established conceptions.
