Astrid Strömberg
Astrid Strömberg (b. 1990) lives and works in Uppsala.
Strömberg works serially, focusing less on individual paintings than on the totality of a body of work and the continuities between them. The shapes of her canvases and their patterned surfaces often respond to architectural features of the exhibition site. Alongside painting, she engages in installation, incorporating readymade elements.
A spirit of playfulness permeates her practice, emerging in the dialogue between works and space, and in the constant oscillation between representation and abstraction. Her paintings may depict places – real or imagined. Walks with her dog are a vital source of inspiration: “I begin to perceive the world on the dog’s terms, through its canine senses.”
Strömberg likens her relationship to painting to her bond with her dog: both act as guides, leading her somewhere unforeseen. What she finds most compelling about painting is that “just as something seems graspable, it has already slipped out of reach”.
